			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It&#8217;s often said that less is more. If only this were true for computer devices like printers and scanners, which take up a lot of desktop real estate. The reality is that small, stylish, portable versions of these gadgets are often pricey and not as functional. </p>

<p>This week, I reviewed two products that unfortunately live up to that reality: a portable printer and mini scanner that put a premium on good looks at $300 each. I&#8217;ve been using Fujitsu&#8217;s newest $295 mini scanner, the ScanSnap S1300 (<a href="http://www.fujitsu.com/global/">fujitsu.com</a>), and PlanOn System Solutions Inc.&#8217;s tiny $300 PrintStik PS905ME (<a href="http://3.ly/6QVS">http://3.ly/6QVS</a>). There are several good printers, scanners or all-in-ones that cost significantly less or offer more functionality than these devices. </p>
<p>But boy, do these gadgets look good. The Fujitsu ScanSnap collapses down to a small, rectangular box with mirrored buttons. The PlanOn PrintStik resembles a box of aluminum foil in the kitchen drawer&#8211;except more compact. </p>
<p>Both devices are small and lightweight enough to fit in a bag or briefcase, if necessary. Either one of these could be ported around without a problem: The PrintStik weighs 1.5 pounds and the ScanSnap weighs twice as much at 3.08 pounds. Both fit well in a tiny work space or on the desktops of people like me, who don&#8217;t print or scan much and don&#8217;t want a device taking up a lot of space. </p>
<p>As is usually the case with smaller devices that lack display screens and extra buttons, one hopes they come with straightforward software or simply plug in and play. The Fujitsu ScanSnap meets that requirement with software that installs on Macs or PCs and can be used without reading complicated instructions.</p>

<p>The PlanOn PrintStik worked adequately as a basic black-and-white printer for Windows PCs (it isn&#8217;t Mac compatible), but fell short as a wireless printer for smart phones. The PrintStik is meant to receive and print documents sent to it via Bluetooth from BlackBerrys, but I found the BlackBerry program to be clumsy and in the end, it didn&#8217;t even work despite at least two dozen attempts. PlanOn&#8217;s tech support said they thought my PrintStik&#8217;s Bluetooth could be faulty, but couldn&#8217;t send me a new device in time for this column.</p>
<p>These two devices offer some interesting design elements. The PlanOn PrintStik PS905ME uses thermal printing&#8211;an old technology that has been around for decades&#8211;rather than ink cartridges, to produce images and characters by applying heat at tiny points. </p>
<p>The PrintStik&#8217;s thermal printing only works with special scrolls of thin, slippery paper. It comes in packs of six rolls for $23; one roll is about 23 feet long and prints roughly 30 sheets of letter-size paper. You can opt to print only as much as a document requires to save paper. But a long document prints out in one continuous scroll rather than separate pages. </p>
<p>The PrintStik has a rechargeable battery that lasts long enough to print about 30 pages; a wall charger is also included. It can churn out up to three pages per minute. I can imagine tossing this printer into my suitcase for business trips; it would also come in handy for printing boarding passes for use at the airport, among other things.</p>
<p>Documents that are supposed to be printable from the BlackBerry with a remote-printing app include Web pages, attachments including PDFs, Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, JPEGs, and PowerPoint presentations. PlanOn representatives say an app will be available for Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) iPhone and Google&#8217;s (GOOG) Android phones in about four or five months; they also are working on an iPad application. Though the PrintStik&#8217;s remote-printing app for the BlackBerry is currently free, the company intends to begin charging $30 annually for its remote-printing service this summer. </p>
<p>Fujitsu&#8217;s ScanSnap S1300 can suck in 10 pages at once, and has two cameras that can scan the front and back of printouts. This process can scan as many as eight dual-sided pages a minute. Item sizes range from 2&#215;2-inch cards to legal documents. </p>
<p>The ScanSnap comes with a wall charger but also runs without being plugged into the wall: It uses a USB cord for charging from a PC in addition to the USB cord that transfers data between the scanner and computer.</p>
<p>Seconds after I scanned documents into the ScanSnap, colorful icons appeared on my computer screen. Choosing one of these icons let me send the documents to one of the following: email, Word, a printer, Excel, iPhoto or Cardiris&#8211;a program that exports contact information from scanned business cards into Address Book or Entourage; CardMinder on Windows exports contact information to Outlook and other programs.</p>
<p>If you want to scan old or precious documents, you may not like using the ScanSnap&#8217;s sucking method for scanning, in case a page gets stuck or damaged. For sensitive objects or page scanning, the best bet is to use a flatbed scanner or all-in-one (that prints, scans, and faxes) with a lift-up lid that scans items on a flat surface. </p>
<p>Though the Fujitsu ScanSnap S1300 and PlanOn PrintStik PS905ME aren&#8217;t the least expensive or the most functional devices of their kind, they&#8217;re easy to move around and take up minimal amounts of space. For some people, that may be well worth the higher cost. </p>

			<description><![CDATA[Walt Mossberg reviews Dell's M11x and Sony's Vaio X, two diminutive laptops aimed at radically different customers.]]></description>
			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>For all the talk about new tablet computers like Apple&#8217;s iPad, laptops remain the computer industry&#8217;s bread and butter, and smaller laptops are especially popular with consumers.</p>
<p>So, I&#8217;ve been testing two diminutive laptops, both with 11-inch screens, that show how clever engineering can take a familiar device and customize it for particular audiences. These two machines couldn&#8217;t be more different, and they are aimed at radically different customers. Neither is a bargain-priced netbook, but both were designed with compactness in mind.</p>

<p>One of these products is from Dell&#8217;s Alienware group, which specializes in potent computers for hard-core gamers. The device is called the M11x, and it came out this week at a base price of $799. It&#8217;s an attempt to pack much of the power gamers typically tote around inside thicker, heavier laptops into a much more portable chassis. The M11x weighs about 4.4 pounds, which in the gaming world is svelte, and is about 1.3 inches thick.</p>
<p>The other machine I&#8217;ve been testing was released by Sony over the holiday shopping season with relatively little mass-market fanfare. It&#8217;s called the Vaio X, starts at $1,299 and is easily the lightest laptop I&#8217;ve ever reviewed. </p>
<p>In fact, it&#8217;s so light, at just 1.6 pounds, that at first I thought it must be a mock-up made of cardboard. The Vaio X is also just a tad over a half an inch thick. Its processor and graphics system are like a netbook&#8217;s, so it can&#8217;t come close to matching the Dell (DELL) in performance. But it isn&#8217;t meant for the performance market. It&#8217;s meant for highly mobile users who do typical computing, want to show off something sleek and can tolerate a high price and weak battery life in the standard configuration.</p>
<p>The M11x is a chunky box that, despite its size, is immediately recognizable as an Alienware product. The power button looks like a space alien&#8217;s face, and, along with the keyboard and some other features on the front edge, it can be made to light up and pulse in a variety of bright colors.</p>
<p>Inside, it sports dual graphics systems—one powerful discrete graphics card for heavy-duty gaming, and one lesser integrated card for other tasks or when you want to save battery life. You can switch between them quickly, without rebooting.</p>
<p>I am not a serious gamer, but I briefly tested the M11x on some included 3D games, and they ran smoothly and well. The machine also did great on high-definition video and on common tasks like Web browsing, email and word processing. It&#8217;s also packed with ports, including an HDMI connector, the new standard for easy hookup to a TV.</p>
<p>On my tough battery test, the Alienware did pretty well, clocking in at just under four hours with the more potent graphics in use, and just under five hours with the lesser graphics turned on. In normal usage patterns, you could stretch these figures.</p>
<p>The downsides to this machine are that the keyboard is cramped, and the specs on the $799 base model might not satisfy a serious gamer or video creator. It has a relatively small 160-gigabyte hard disk and a low-end Pentium processor. The model I tested, with a 500-gigabyte hard disk, a Core 2 Duo processor and twice the base 2 gigabytes of memory, costs $1,099.</p>
<p>The Sony Vaio X is a world apart, a reminder that the company, which years ago pioneered small, thin, costly laptops, can keep doing so. This little computer can get lost in your briefcase.</p>
<p>The Vaio X comes in several colors, but has modest specs for the price. It uses the Intel Atom processor, common in netbooks, and integrated graphics. It only comes with 2 gigabytes of memory, and the base $1,299 model has a very small 64-gigabyte solid-state drive for storage. You can double the storage on the $1,499 model I tested.</p>
<p>The Sony (SNE) is gorgeous, and its lightness amazed everyone to whom I showed it. It handled all the common tasks I threw at it, including some HD video from YouTube, which played fine. But it also has a cramped keyboard, plus a tiny touch pad.</p>
<p>In addition to Wi-Fi, the Sony also includes a 3G cellular modem from Verizon, which I tested and which worked well. If you opt to use it, you have to pay Verizon, with monthly contracts starting at $40 and no-contract usage at $15 a day or $30 a week. All these plans have usage caps.</p>
<p>The Achilles&#8217; heel of the Sony is battery life. Its petite built-in battery got a miserable one hour and 48 minutes in my test, which might mean 2.5 hours in normal use. Sony does include an expanded battery with the unit, which got an impressive eight hours and 11 minutes in my test, or perhaps as much as 10 in typical use. But this battery is huge. It covers the entire bottom of the machine and must be affixed with screws. The battery roughly triples the computer&#8217;s thickness and brings its weight to nearly three pounds.</p>
<p>These two creative designs show that, despite the coming wave of tablets, the laptop is still a platform for innovation.</p>

			<description><![CDATA[Walt answers reader questions about watching YouTube videos on the Apple iPad and browser alternatives to Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.]]></description>
			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="question"><em>My wife likes to watch YouTube videos. I was thinking of getting her a new Apple iPad tablet, but apparently the iPad lacks an easy way to do this. Why, oh, why did Apple (AAPL) fail to make it easy to access YouTube on the iPad?</em></p>
<p>A: Even though the Web browser on the iPad can&#8217;t play Adobe Flash video files like the ones YouTube typically serves up, Apple did include a special YouTube app on the iPad, similar to the one on the iPhone, that can play loads of YouTube content. In fact, this YouTube app was shown at the iPad launch. The company says the one for the iPad has been rewritten to take advantage of the larger screen, as have all of Apple&#8217;s built-in apps. Apple also says when you orient the tablet horizontally, YouTube videos automatically play in full screen mode. However, Web videos using Flash that must be accessed through a Web browser don&#8217;t appear to work on the iPad, just as they don&#8217;t work on the iPhone.</p>
<p class="question"><em>I have had Internet Explorer 6 as the browser on my home PC for years. Having heard about the security problem with IE6, I wonder if you would suggest that I keep IE6, download IE8 or download another browser.</em></p>
<p>A: I definitely recommend that you dump IE6, which is outdated and insecure compared to newer browsers. Its latest successor, Internet Explorer 8, has many nice features and much improved security. But, in my tests, IE8 proved slower than its main competitors. So I&#8217;d suggest switching to either Mozilla Firefox, Apple&#8217;s Safari for Windows or Google Chrome. The latter two are the fastest Windows browsers I&#8217;ve tested, but Firefox boasts many more add-ins and extensions that add extra features. </p>

			<title>New Way to Flit from Store to Store</title>

			<description><![CDATA[As the home base for a Web search, Flit.com makes online shopping feel more like a day at the mall.]]></description>
			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Imagine going to the mall in search of a new pair of black leather gloves. But this time, rather than starting the search by going straight to your favorite stores, which look familiar and carry recognizable merchandise at expected prices, you must walk to the center of the mall and sort through a giant bucket of gloves with few identifying marks other than price.</p>
<p>Wacky as this scenario sounds, it&#8217;s the way many people shop online every day. They look for specific items by searching Web sites like <a href="http://www.amazon.com/">Amazon.com</a> (AMZN) and <a href="http://www.ebay.com/">eBay.com</a> (EBAY), where results are displayed in big lists without much association to stores. That means all the details a customer knows about a store—its ambiance, prices, style, quality and variety—aren&#8217;t put to use.</p>

<p>This week, I shopped online with <a href="http://flit.com/">Flit.com</a>, a free Web site owned by San Francisco-area company enterONCE LLC that encourages people to shop using the same method they use at the mall: Start inside familiar stores, not in a giant bucket of products. It&#8217;s designed so people will enter a search item once and receive multiple suggestions of places where the item might be sold. As shoppers &#8220;flit&#8221; off to those stores, Flit.com serves as a home base, remembering the original search so shoppers can flit back, choose different stores and shop from there again and again.</p>
<p>I used Flit.com to shop online for black high heels, a digital camera, the iPad (not yet available), a robe, running sneakers and black leather gloves. I found that using it saved me from having to manually enter multiple URLs, and I liked how it helped me shop from store to store, since I already associate certain styles with each.</p>

<p>A male colleague of mine explained that he doesn&#8217;t naturally shop according to stores, so it&#8217;s worth noting that Flit.com may appeal to women more than men. I wish Flit.com had a way of combining its store shopping with side-by-side comparisons of the same product; the company plans to add this in March.</p>
<p>The Flit.com shopping process works as follows: Type in a search item, such as &#8220;red dress,&#8221; then choose to search in Value or Premium stores and press the Enter key. This returns a list of stores from a pool of more than 300 that carry red dresses; store categories can be selected to return more accurate results. Select one store, and its Web site opens to reveal all the red dresses carried there. Search results include stores like Target, Best Buy (BBY), Bloomingdales, Sam&#8217;s Club and J. Crew, as well as popular shopping sites like Amazon, NexTag, Buy.com and eBay.</p>
<p>The value behind Flit.com&#8217;s method of flitting you out to individual store sites is twofold. First, you still get to shop on a store&#8217;s own Web page, many of which were designed to uniquely reflect the store&#8217;s spirit and style. Lots of shoppers have saved shipping and credit card information with a store Web site, or they have coupon codes or gift certificates to use there. Shopping on each store&#8217;s page rather than on a general shopping site lets them tap into that data.</p>

Type in an item such as &#8216;black dress&#8217; (above), choosing to search in Value or Premium stores.</div>
<p>Second, after you flit off to a store Web site, an orange button remains in a Flit.com toolbar at the top of the page; click there to return back to home base before flitting off to yet another shopping site. Flit.com will keep a breadcrumb trail of where you have gone in your shopping session, using store icons to represent each site that was visited. You can place a check mark beside sites to remember them.</p>
<p>Flit.com&#8217;s search results are only as good as each individual store&#8217;s search engine, so if a store doesn&#8217;t do a good job of querying its own inventory, you&#8217;re out of luck.</p>
<p>The Flit.com home page would benefit from offering more ways to sort stores, such as by price range rather than just by using Value, Premium or alphabetical order—especially because &#8220;value&#8221; and &#8220;premium&#8221; mean different things to different people. The company&#8217;s CEO says Flit.com will likely add sorting by price and other categories by this spring.</p>
<p>In a hunt for a robe using Flit.com, I was surprised to see that of the 12 top stores that appeared at the top of the list, seven of them didn&#8217;t carry robes, according to what the store sites told me when I linked out to them. I asked Flit.com&#8217;s CEO about this and he said that search returns don&#8217;t filter out some stores that may have limited or no selections, and that this is valuable because it shows shoppers that a certain store doesn&#8217;t carry an item—just like physical shopping. I had hoped that one advantage to Flit.com would be less virtual wandering in stores that don&#8217;t carry what I am looking for.</p>

<p>Banana Republic, Gap and Old Navy Web sites, all owned by the same company, didn&#8217;t display the orange toolbar button that returns shoppers to Flit.com because they use their own toolbar at the top of their pages.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s too bad that Flit.com&#8217;s breadcrumb trail, which tracks where a user has shopped, doesn&#8217;t hold specific items. For example, I found the same pair of running sneakers in my size after digging into Web sites for Road Runner Sports and Zappos, but I couldn&#8217;t save the shoes anywhere. Flit.com&#8217;s CEO says capturing individual products and merging them into the search trail will be offered in March. </p>
<p><a href="http://www.snipi.com/">Snipi.com</a>, a free shopping site I reviewed last spring, uses a toolbar for holding items that are dragged and dropped into it so they can be remembered and revisited for buying at a later time. Flit searches can be saved or shared with others with the &#8220;save your shopping session&#8221; button. It prompts the user to enter an email address for sending a Web link of the saved session. </p>
<p>Flit.com is currently funding its operating costs from an original private investment and doesn&#8217;t have any formal relationships with the stores where it sends users. The site&#8217;s CEO says the company hopes to negotiate a system where it gets paid by the stores, or by third parties, for any business it generates.</p>
<p>After doing a lot of flitting, I noticed a screen between the Flit.com search results page and the store page that asked if I wanted to share Flit with friends, and offered to let me do so through email or a social-networking site like Twitter or Facebook. This screen pops up roughly every 25 flits, according to the company, but it includes a step to skip this and continue to the store&#8217;s Web page.</p>
<p>The people working at Flit.com seem to know what the site needs to improve, thus preventing it from being just another fleeting online shopping site. Its shopping trail needs a little help, as do its result categorizations, but the way it lets users shop online starting with familiar stores makes Web shopping comfortable and easy, much like visiting physical stores.</p>

			<title>New Mozilla Email Is Easier to Use, But Not Easy Enough</title>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The good thing about open-source software is that it harnesses the talents of techies around the world. The bad thing about open-source software is that it&#8217;s too often geared toward such techies, not average folks. That&#8217;s why there haven&#8217;t been many widely popular open-source products for mass-market computer users. The shining exception is the Firefox Web browser, which is published by the nonprofit Mozilla Foundation.</p>
<p>Now, Mozilla is trying for another win, with a new, overhauled version of the companion email program for Firefox, called Thunderbird. Unlike Firefox, Thunderbird never really caught on, partly because it was too complicated. The foundation has spent two years streamlining, simplifying and automating the email program. The result is the newly released Thunderbird 3, which will compete with products such as Microsoft Outlook on Windows and Apple Mail on the Mac.</p>

<p>While many people these days are content to store and manage all their email using Web-based interfaces provided by Yahoo (YHOO), Google (GOOG) and others, plenty of folks still want to use local programs. These save the messages to their own hard disks, include oodles of customized features, and can be more easily used offline.</p>
<p>But the choices among such local email programs are dwindling. Outlook, which can be bloated and slow for consumers, has driven out many competitors on Windows, and the new Windows 7 doesn&#8217;t even come with a built-in email program. On the Mac, most people seem to use Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) very good built-in email program, Apple Mail, but it&#8217;s hard for third parties to customize.</p>
<p>So, can Thunderbird 3, which is free and runs on Windows, Mac and Linux computers, become the Firefox of email, the go-to choice for average users looking for an alternative to the big guys? </p>
<p>After testing the new edition for about a week, I believe that Thunderbird 3 is a significant improvement over earlier versions of the product. It is indeed a step forward, with some interesting new features and generally simpler operation. But, in my view, all the techie rough edges still haven&#8217;t been sanded off and it&#8217;s still clumsy in a few places.</p>
<p>First, the pluses. Mozilla has brought tabs, now standard in Web browsers, to Thunderbird. If you simply double click on an email in a list, it opens in its own tab. That way you can consult key emails when you need them without opening a welter of overlapping windows. If you do a search, the search results appear in their own tab.</p>
<p>The new Thunderbird also has a very cool filtered search system. It not only brings up all messages containing your search term, but shows a graphical timeline of the message traffic on that search term. In a left panel next to the list of search results, it lists all the people mentioned in the messages turned up by the search—even if you weren&#8217;t searching for them—and lets you further refine the results by just clicking on their names.</p>
<p>There is also a rapid way to add email addresses in a message header to your address book: You just click on a star icon next to the name. There also are multiple ways to view folders. With one click, you can choose to see a list of only unread folders, or favorite folders, or recent folders.</p>
<p>Another cool feature is an attachment reminder. If you are writing a message and you include words like &#8220;attachment,&#8221; &#8220;attached,&#8221; or &#8220;enclosed,&#8221; Thunderbird will pop up a yellow warning at the bottom of the screen reminding you to attach a file. </p>
<p>And, throughout the program, the designers have tried to simplify things, so you don&#8217;t have to be an engineer to use it. One example, which is a catch-up feature, is an account set-up wizard that spares you from knowing the names of servers.</p>
<p>But there are still too many issues for me. Thunderbird can&#8217;t be set to automatically show a CC or BCC line in a new email you&#8217;re composing. Every new address you add is set as a &#8220;To&#8221; address, and you must click on a drop-down menu to change it to CC or BCC—an extra step that becomes tedious quickly.</p>
<p>In addition, unlike in Outlook or Apple Mail, you can only have a single signature for each account. The program also doesn&#8217;t support Microsoft Exchange for corporate mail, unless IT administrators make changes at their servers. </p>
<p>And I found that the program&#8217;s preferences and settings, while improved, can still be too techie. For instance, to tell the program to display certain graphics in email, even though they can pose a security risk, you must choose an option called &#8220;mailnews.message_display.disable_remote_image.&#8221;</p>
<p>To be fair, because Thunderbird is an open-source program, it relies on third-party add-ons and extensions for some features, such as multiple signatures. But some of the add-ins I tried, like a built-in calendar that can synchronize with Google, took multiple complicated steps that would likely deter a mainstream user.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re looking for a new email client, the new and improved Thunderbird is worth a try, but it&#8217;s not yet the Firefox of email.</p>

			<title>First Impressions of the New Apple iPad</title>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It&#8217;s about the software, stupid. While all sorts of commentators were focusing on how much Apple&#8217;s new $499 iPad tablet computer looks like an oversized iPhone, the key to whether it can be the first multi-function tablet to win wide public acceptance probably lies in whether consumers perceive it as a suitable replacement for a laptop in key scenarios. And that, in my view, depends heavily on the software and services that flow through its handsome little body.</p>
<p>I have only spent a short time hands-on with the iPad&#8211;too short to fully run it through its paces and formally review it yet. But, after attending the rollout of the new device today, and trying out some of its features for myself, I have some first impressions.</p>

<p>Apple CEO Steve Jobs positioned the iPad as belonging to a new category of device between the smartphone and the laptop (since the netbook, in his view and mine, is really just a small, cheap laptop). But, as the demos unfolded, I kept thinking it was more like a hybrid of the two. </p>
<p>It uses the iPhone&#8217;s basic user interface and physical design. But, taking advantage of a 9.7&#8243; screen and a fast Apple-designed processor, the iPad adds some user interface elements and functionality that aren&#8217;t available&#8211;or at least typical&#8211;on smart phones, but look more like computer software. For instance, its photo program works more like iPhoto on a Mac than the photo app on an iPhone, and it will be available with a touch version of Apple&#8217;s iWork productivity suite, which is Apple&#8217;s take on Microsoft Office. This is a much more powerful program than the phone-based office suites for the iPhone or BlackBerry, and Apple (AAPL) is only charging $30 for it.</p>

<p>Also, Apple has rewritten most of the core iPhone apps so they look more like, and have more of the features of, Mac or PC programs. But they aren&#8217;t mere clones of full computer apps. For instance, many forego standard menus for clever overlays and sidebars that work more naturally with the iPad&#8217;s multi-touch interface. Other app developers can do this, too. But, even if they don&#8217;t, the company said the iPad will run most of the current 140,000 iPhone apps, either in a small window on the screen, or in a full-screen mode. That&#8217;s a huge plus for a new device.</p>

<p>Mr. Jobs said after the onstage program ended that he sees the iPad&#8217;s user interface as a fuller expression of the one on the iPhone, which had been limited by screen real estate.</p>
<p>And, although the reported video and music streaming services were nowhere to be seen at this preview, Mr. Jobs did offer a taste of how the iPad could deliver content, beyond simply downloads from the iTunes store. He showed off a new e-book reader app with built-in online book store that, visually at least, blew away the Amazon (AMZN) Kindle, even if it seemed to lack all of the Kindle&#8217;s features and may have a smaller catalog. Representatives of the New York Times (NYT) showed an iPad digital version of their newspaper that seemed vastly more usable than the clumsy version now on the Kindle and its ilk.</p>
<p>So, the iPad is more than just a giant iPod Touch or iPhone, even though it looks like one. But the question is, will that be enough to get consumers to shell out for it, and make it part of their daily lives? Or will it be a niche product, like Microsoft&#8217;s (MSFT) Tablet PC or Mr. Jobs&#8217; own Apple TV?</p>

<p>On the plus side, the device is handsome, feels comfortable and solid to hold, and has all that beautiful software built in. Oh, and it&#8217;s amazingly low-priced for an Apple product, with that modest $499 price tag for a base version with 16 gigabytes of memory and Wi-Fi, but no cell phone data connectivity. (A fully loaded model with 64 gigabytes, Wi-Fi and a no-contract 3G cellular data plan is $829, and there are variations in between.)</p>
<p>It also boasts a decent 10 hours of battery life, and Mr, Jobs told me after the event that, for some functions, like playing video and music, the battery should last even longer. </p>
<p>But there are minuses. First, since it&#8217;s too big to go in a pocket, people might perceive it as just another thing to carry around, despite the fact that it&#8217;s only a half inch thick and weighs just 1.5 pounds. It also lacks a common and popular laptop feature&#8211;a web cam. So, it can&#8217;t be used for video chats or for the creation of web videos.</p>

<p>Also, the carrier for the iPad&#8217;s 3G plan is the deeply unpopular AT&#038;T&#8211;there were groans and boos among Mr. Jobs&#8217; otherwise excited audience when this was announced. AT&#038;T is offering bargain prices for iPad data service compared to what it charges laptop owners. But its network is overwhelmed in many big cities and many iPhone lovers, who are strong candidates to buy an iPad, curse the carrier daily.</p>
<p>Finally, while it&#8217;s too early for me to say without lots of testing, the size of the iPad&#8217;s virtual keyboard may be a liability. I found it almost too wide for thumb typing, and a colleague who&#8217;s a whiz at touch typing and tried it briefly found it awkward to type on. Apple is offering an auxiliary physical keyboard that docks with, and charges, the iPad. But you won&#8217;t want to lug that around.</p>
<p>Still, the software looked impressive, and that could help Steve Jobs do the one thing even he has never done in an amazing career: get the public to love not just a better version of an existing type of gadget, but a whole new category of gadget.</p>

			<description><![CDATA[Walt answers readers' questions about security for an Internet-based notes system, and recommendations for lightweight laptops.]]></description>
			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="question"><em>Your review of the Evernote notes-storage service last week made it sound tempting. But do they encrypt my notes on their servers so a hacker can&#8217;t steal them? And what happens to my notes if they go out of business?</em></p>
<p>A: Evernote isn&#8217;t a purely cloud-based (Internet-based) system. It does store your notes on its servers, for Web access, but it also exists as a synchronized local application on Windows, Mac and every major smart phone. So your notes are stored locally on the hard disks of your various computers. Local storage is available on the iPhone app, and the company says it plans to add local storage to Android phones soon. Thus, even if the company went out of business, the notes on your Mac or PC or iPhone would be safe. </p>
<p>Evernote says it doesn&#8217;t encrypt data on its servers because it indexes all your notes for quick searching, and performs image recognition on photo notes, and it claims encryption would prevent that. Your user name and password, however, are always encrypted in transit, according to the company, and passwords aren&#8217;t stored on its servers—even if you have a free account. For premium users ($5 a month or $45 a year) all of the data, not just user names and passwords, are encrypted. </p>
<p>Also, the service allows users to encrypt all, or any part, of any note, and the company says it doesn&#8217;t receive the key to decrypt this material. The only part of a wholly encrypted note that the company would hold on its server would be its title and tags, if any.</p>
<p class="question"><em>I&#8217;m looking for a lightweight laptop, ideally under five pounds and with long-lasting battery life. I&#8217;m confused by all the models. Can you help me to narrow it down to a handful?</em></p>
<p>A: Unless you are looking for a tiny netbook, I suggest you consider a couple of options. One is a new category of Windows laptops variously called things like &#8220;ultrathin&#8221; and &#8220;thin and light.&#8221; All are well under five pounds in weight and many have good battery life. I reviewed three of these laptops—models from Toshiba, Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) and Lenovo—back in November, and you can read the column at <a href="http://bit.ly/m3JQn">http://bit.ly/m3JQn</a>.</p>
<p>The second option worth considering is a Mac, which I believe has superior software and security, albeit at a higher price. Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) MacBook and 13&#8243; MacBook Pro, while heavier than this new batch of Windows machines, weigh slightly under five pounds and have strong battery life. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Despite the popularity of music downloads or streamed music through online services like Pandora, the good old radio is still a source of entertainment for many people. It turns on as soon as the car starts and inspires shower singers every morning. Plus, it works pretty much the same as it has for decades.</p>
<p>The trusty radio has finally received an upgrade—to the world of high definition. HD Radio, which has been gathering steam for a few years, sounds better and offers more channels than traditional radio. It also sends properly equipped devices text data like a song&#8217;s title and artist name as well as traffic, weather and stock information. One HD Radio even lets you pause programming in mid-stream, so you don&#8217;t have to miss a song or NPR story just because you&#8217;re drying your hair. And future HD Radio devices will record programming like television DVRs do now.</p>

<p>This week, I tested three HD Radio devices to see what all the hype was about: Best Buy&#8217;s Insignia $50 HD Radio Portable Player (<a href="http://bit.ly/75FcIc">http://bit.ly/75FcIc</a>); Coby Electronics Corp.&#8217;s $100 Portable HD Radio System (http://bit.ly/6G6g4Q); and Sony&#8217;s $160 HD Radio with Dock for iPod + iPhone (http://bit.ly/8c0Bqf). I also talked with iBiquity Digital Corp., the company that developed HD Radio technology and licenses it to broadcasters and radio manufacturers, about how this works.</p>
<p>I found some worthwhile offerings in HD Radio, like commercial-free, sub-channels within existing stations and better sound quality. IBiquity claims that HD Radio makes FM stations sound like CD quality and AM stations sound like FM; to my ear, this seemed to be true.</p>
<p>Overall, I didn&#8217;t hear enough incredibly great content or sound quality to want to run out and replace my old radios. Washington, D.C., where I live, supposedly offers 41 HD Radio channels, but I couldn&#8217;t find as many as that. Over 2,000 primary HD Radio stations and some 1,100 sub-channels can be heard in all 50 states and Puerto Rico, but some areas won&#8217;t offer as many stations, according to iBiquity.</p>
<p>Tuning in each HD station takes longer, like the way changing channels on a digital TV takes an extra second. But in my tests, this process took five seconds or more per change of channel. This kind of delay is enough to try anyone&#8217;s patience. </p>
<p>It might help to explain the technology behind HD Radio. HD Radio makes it possible for local broadcasters to transmit content via digital signals on existing AM and FM frequencies. The digital signals are encrypted and eliminate static heard in analog broadcasts, resulting in better sound quality. But they take longer to be decoded by HD Radio receivers. </p>
<p>Many people mistakenly think that in order to listen to HD Radio, they must pay an extra monthly fee like with satellite radio. If you buy an HD Radio device, you&#8217;ll only pay for it because the service itself is free; its price is built into the cost of the hardware.</p>
<p>Besides boosting the signal, HD Radio offers extra channels of programming you wouldn&#8217;t hear on a regular set. It allows existing FM channels to play additional content on &#8220;multicast&#8221; channels. Most multicast channels are commercial-free, and they appear on the radio&#8217;s display as HD2 and HD3. </p>
<p>Don&#8217;t confuse HD Radio with the text data that scrolls across the screens of many current radios, like my car radio. This is a non-audio service called Radio Broadcast Data System that has been around for a while.</p>
<p>Each of the radios I tested offered an HD Seek feature—a way of skimming through all stations to find and play those that could be heard in HD. But HD Seek didn&#8217;t stop on multicast channels; to get to those on each radio, I had to press buttons to tune up or down while listeningwhile already listening to  to a main HD radio channel. Some HD Radio models have HD Seek tuning functions that find HD1 stations as well as HD2 and HD3 channels. I saved these HD2 and HD3 multicast channels in my radio presets so they were easier to find again.</p>
<p>While a radio was tuning in, or linking into, a channel (the process that took several seconds), an &#8220;HD&#8221; logo flashed on each radio&#8217;s display. This logo turned solid when the station was found and finally started playing. I listened to multicast channels like a bluegrass/country station from my local NPR channel. Another station&#8217;s two multicast channels played &#8220;South Asian&#8221; music and the Mormon Channel.</p>
<p>As its name suggests, Sony&#8217;s HD Radio with Dock for iPod + iPhone has a built-in dock for iPods, iPhones and iPod Touches. If, while using this radio, you hear a song on an HD channel that you like, you can hit a &#8220;Tag&#8221; button to save information about that song. The next time you dock an iPod, iPhone or iPod Touch into the Sony radio, these tags are transferred onto the portable player. When you plug that device into a computer and open the iTunes Store, a list of the tagged songs appears, making it easier to recall songs you liked and may want to buy. This radio is a tabletop model and has the largest display screen of the three radios I tested. It also comes with a remote. It saves up to 20 FM and 20 AM presets.</p>
<p>The Insignia HD Radio Portable Player is a much smaller unit that comes with earbuds and an armband for exercising. If this radio tuned in an HD channel that offered multicast sub-channels, these were indicated on the display with a &#8220;+&#8221; sign, like &#8220;HD1+.&#8221; The Insignia radio stores 10 preset stations.</p>
<p>The Coby Electronics Portable HD Radio System resembled a single, lightweight speaker with a wheel, six buttons and a digital display on it. IBiquity Digital said this model uses an older HD Radio technology that doesn&#8217;t offer as much reception sensitivity as the Sony and Insignia. Still, it was simple to use, and its wheel made it a cinch to tune in HD2 and HD3 channels. It stores up to 10 presets.</p>
<p>In September, when Microsoft&#8217;s Zune HD was released, I tested its built-in HD Radio, the only such device capable of pausing live radio content. I paused music and talk radio on the Zune&#8217;s HD Radio when my phone rang, then un-paused the station to resume. This doesn&#8217;t work if the device is turned off and on again before resuming play.</p>
<p>Along with stand-alone radios, HD Radio receivers also are becoming more common in home audio systems and in cars. But while HD Radio&#8217;s sound quality and extra channels are definite pluses, the number of available stations needs to improve to make the wait for the HD channels to start playing more tolerable. </p>

			<description><![CDATA[Walt Mossberg reviews Evernote, which lets you create notes of text and photos and file them in your own searchable database, accessible on a number of devices.]]></description>
			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>What if you could collect, in one well-organized, searchable, private digital repository, all the notes you create, clips from Web pages and emails you want to recall, dictated audio memos, photos, key documents, and more? And what if that repository was constantly synchronized, so it was accessible through a Web browser and through apps on your various computers and smart phones?</p>
<p>Well, such a service exists. And it&#8217;s free. It&#8217;s called Evernote. I&#8217;ve been testing it for about a week on a multiplicity of computers and phones, and found that it works very well. Evernote is an excellent example of hybrid computing—using the &#8220;cloud&#8221; online to store data and perform tasks, while still taking advantage of the power and offline ability of local devices.</p>

<p>The idea behind Evernote is to be a sort of digital file cabinet. It allows you to create &#8220;notebooks&#8221; containing items called notes. These notes can range from text to photos to many kinds of attached files. You can locate, group and peruse them quickly, without having to dig through a computer&#8217;s file system. When I first reviewed the product, back in 2005, Evernote was a Windows-only, purely local information organizer. Now it&#8217;s a multi-platform, Internet-savvy, synchronized place for your ideas.</p>
<p>You can sign up for Evernote free at evernote.com, and use it entirely as a Web-based application, through any of the major Web browsers. But Evernote also comes in customized versions for a staggering array of devices: Windows and Macintosh computers, and for all the major smart phones, including the iPhone; the BlackBerry; phones running Google&#8217;s Android operating system; the latest Palm (PALM) phones; and Windows Mobile phones.</p>
<p>This week, Evernote, which is made by a small Silicon Valley company of the same name, is introducing a totally revamped Windows version that brings the platform into parity with the company&#8217;s previously more advanced Macintosh version.</p>
<p>I tested Evernote on two Macs and two Windows PCs, as well as an iPhone, a Palm Pre phone and the new Nexus One phone from Google (GOOG). I also tried free plug-ins the company offers that make it easy to insert all or part of a Web page or email into an Evernote note. These are available for the Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari and Chrome Web browsers, and for the Outlook email program. There are also system-wide Evernote buttons, which make capturing notes quicker, for Windows and the Mac.</p>
<p>I found Evernote works well for gathering ideas for business or personal projects, hobbies, or events you&#8217;re planning. When you see something or think of something you want to add, you can do it from whatever computer or phone is handy, and it will shortly appear on all of them.</p>
<p>Here are a few examples of how I used Evernote. I typed notes to myself on my desktops and laptops. I dictated a reminder to myself using the Evernote app on my iPhone. I used the Nexus One&#8217;s camera to take a picture of a person&#8217;s business card. I also copied text from Web pages, emails, and Word documents, and pasted them as notes. I even attached whole files to notes.</p>
<p>Within a few minutes, all of these notes were available on my personal Evernote Web site and from within all the Evernote apps on my computers and phones. I could search through them, email them, print them, group them with related items, or edit and annotate them.</p>
<p>Every Evernote user also gets a unique Evernote email address, and anything you email to that address goes into your repository as a new note. You also can use Twitter to get a note into Evernote.</p>
<p>The program has a few extra-cool features. If you create a note from a photo that includes printing, Evernote&#8217;s servers will try to figure out the words and make them searchable. This worked well in my tests with photos of business cards. And some smart-phone apps can save items directly into Evernote notes. One example I tested successfully was the Associated Press news app on the iPhone.</p>
<p>There are a few minor downsides to Evernote. While there&#8217;s no overall limit to the amount of data you can store, you can only upload 40 megabytes a month with the free version, attach certain types of files to notes, and you are forced to view ads. A premium version, which costs $5 a month, or $45 a year, increases the quota to 500 megabytes monthly, removes the ads, allows attaching any file type, and adds more features.</p>
<p>Also, I found the Evernote programs and apps, while similar, differ slightly depending on the capabilities of the platform they run on. Among the phone versions, for instance, the iPhone app is by far the most full-featured, and is currently the only one that can store whole notebooks offline, though the Android version is due to get that feature soon. Finally, the Evernote plug-in crashed Outlook on one of my Windows computers.</p>
<p>But, all in all, I found Evernote to be a valuable, easy-to-use tool that simplified my work and made good use of both the Internet and all my devices.</p>

			<title>Highlighting Text in E-Books and IE8 Accelerators on a Mac</title>

			<description><![CDATA[Walt answers readers' questions on e-books, Internet Explorer and the best laptop to buy for law school.]]></description>
			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="question"><em>I&#8217;m waiting for e-book devices that allow the reader to highlight text. This is essential for students reading textbooks, and for nonfiction readers. Any chance of that happening?</em></p>
<p>A: Your wait is over. Major e-book readers I&#8217;ve tested, such as Amazon.com&#8217;s Kindle and Sony&#8217;s Reader Daily Edition, already allow highlighting. In other words, you can select any section of text in a book and give it a gray background so it stands out from the rest of the text, persistently. It&#8217;s not yellow or any other color, because the screens are grayscale and don&#8217;t display colors, but it is highlighting. You can also add notes on e-readers. </p>
<p class="question"><em>I have a Mac laptop that I use at home with Safari and Firefox installed. My office environment uses Windows and Microsoft&#8217;s Internet Explorer 8. One of the features of IE8 that I really like and often use are &#8220;Accelerators.&#8221; I would like to know if there are accelerators available for download for the most up-to-date versions of either Safari or Firefox.</em></p>
<p>A: Accelerators are a particular feature of IE8 that allows users to perform an action on a highlighted portion of a Web page—like mapping an address or translating a word—even using services provided by companies that compete with Microsoft. Microsoft has put a system in place for companies to write accelerators and users to download them. </p>
<p>Firefox, on both Windows and Mac, has a massive collection of add-ons, some of which work in a manner similar to Accelerators, but it doesn&#8217;t have a directly competing feature. Safari on your Mac also can accommodate added features from third-party companies, some of which can work like accelerators, but it also lacks a feature that specifically goes head to head with IE8&#8217;s Accelerators. </p>
<p class="question"><em>I am going to law school in the fall, and I was wondering which laptop you would suggest I get for this three- to four-year time period of my life?</em></p>
<p>A: It really depends on your priorities, resources and environment. If you&#8217;re on a tight budget, value lots of choice, and enjoy playing games during breaks from work, you might pick a modestly-priced Windows 7 laptop. However, I&#8217;d stay away from netbooks, which can be cramped for writing long documents. If you have more to spend, and value freedom from malware, great built-in software and the convenience of dedicated stores, you might buy an Apple MacBook or MacBook Pro. But I would also recommend asking the school and current students, since it can be advantageous, or even necessary, to be using a laptop that the school prefers or that runs any special software the school requires. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Apps are hot. These are the small programs that can be installed on a digital gadget to get it to do more than what it did when you bought it. Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) iPhone and iPod Touch are the best app platforms right now thanks to the company&#8217;s App Store, which offers an estimated 125,000 apps. Research in Motion (RIMM), Android, and Palm (PALM) devices also work with apps.</p>
<p>But why should smart phones have all the fun? Yahoo (YHOO) Connected TVs from Samsung, LG (LG), Sony (SNE), and Vizio allow people to load app-like &#8220;widgets&#8221;—including Facebook, Twitter, weather and stock quotes—onto their big-screen TVs. And GPS navigation devices take advantage of apps for information on fuel prices and traffic. </p>

<p>This week, I tested a Bluetooth earpiece that also can be made smarter with apps: Aliph&#8217;s $100 Jawbone Icon (http://us.jawbone.com). Like many other wireless earpieces, it connects to your Bluetooth-enabled phone so you can talk, hands-free. Unlike other Bluetooth earpieces, the Jawbone Icon can be plugged into a computer and loaded with different settings and apps. This works using Aliph&#8217;s Web-based software platform called MyTalk (http://mytalk.jawbone.com) and some apps enable more than hands-free talking. </p>
<p>For now, there are only two apps that truly expand the functionality of the earpiece, in my opinion. But MyTalk is a good start in making this tiny Bluetooth device more sophisticated and encouraging more hands-free productivity.</p>
<p>The idea of connecting an earpiece to a PC is helpful in two respects. First, it turns the Jawbone into a dynamic product that can be updated and enhanced over time, rather than never changing from the day you buy it. Second, it lets users more easily adjust the settings of a device that&#8217;s too tiny to have its own screen, thus eliminating the need for more confusing buttons on the device. Over time, these earpieces could become even simpler and smaller as more of their settings are adjusted on the computer.</p>
<p>Since the Jawbone Icon and its MyTalk software platform launched this week, only five &#8220;dial apps&#8221; and 10 &#8220;audio apps&#8221; are available for synching to the earpiece. The former are apps that perform functions by dialing out on your phone, like hands-free text messaging; the latter are settings to adjust the voice making announcements in your ear, like telling you that the battery needs charging. As of now, only one of each app category can be synched onto the Jawbone Icon at any given time. Aliph plans to make the Icon capable of simultaneously running multiple apps sometime this year.</p>
<p>If you ever used one of the earlier Jawbone models and thought you weren&#8217;t hip enough to remember how its hidden earpiece buttons worked, the Jawbone Icon&#8217;s refreshingly simple design will bring a sigh of relief. It uses two easily detected controls. One is an obvious button on the top of the earpiece that controls the earpiece&#8217;s functions. The other is a tiny on/off switch on the inside surface that couldn&#8217;t be easier to use. </p>

<p>The Icon comes in six models with catchy names that match the &#8220;persona&#8221; of the  audio apps: The Hero, The Rogue, The Ace, The Catch, The Thinker and The Bombshell—each literally has its own distinct voice. Each device weighs less and has a wider and shorter design than previous Jawbones. The Icons come in shades of black, silver, white, red and gold, depending on the model&#8217;s persona, and resemble handsome jewelry. </p>
<p>Each earpiece has a short, gray bendable USB connector that allows for easy  access to a PC&#8217;s USB port. This is used for synching and charging the earpiece, though a separate wall charger also comes in the box. </p>
<p>I tested my Jawbone Icon by plugging it into both an Apple MacBook Pro and a Dell (DELL) running Windows 7. I logged onto http://mytalk.jawbone.com and requested an invitation to use the MyTalk software by sending Aliph my email since it&#8217;s still in a &#8220;private beta&#8221; or experimental phase. You&#8217;ll have to do the same until MyTalk comes out of its private beta stage sometime in the next few months. </p>
<p>After setting up an account using my email and a password, I followed on-screen instructions to get started with synching apps to my earpiece.</p>
<p>MyTalk&#8217;s dial apps include five programs that help you do more with your voice, so you don&#8217;t need to look down to type on a mobile device. Once synched with your Jawbone Icon, the app will activate as soon as you press and hold the earpiece button. </p>
<p>For now, only two of the five dial apps are really helpful for the headset: Jott and Dial2Do. Both let people use their voice to send themselves reminders, send tweets on Twitter, and send text messages—assuming the programs correctly interpret what is dictated. I had pretty good luck with this, though one test of the text-messaging function thought I said &#8220;needle&#8221; when I really said &#8220;noodle&#8221; and another interpreted &#8220;blinds&#8221; as &#8220;blind.&#8221;</p>
<p>Of the two, I found Dial2Do a little easier to use. Its Basic Account is free but is limited to sending yourself reminders, while a Pro Account costs $40 a year or $3.99 a month, and offers social-networking, emailing and text-messaging, among other things. Jott can only be used free for one week, but requires a credit-card number for signing up and will charge $2.95 a month after the trial week is over. </p>
<p>MyTalk&#8217;s remaining three dial apps aren&#8217;t too exciting: &#8220;Directory Assistance 411&#8243; and &#8220;Voice Dial,&#8221; a feature that only works if your phone has built-in voice-dial capability, which most do now. Another app called 1-800-FREE411 lets users get 411 information without being charged carrier fees. </p>
<p>MyTalk&#8217;s audio apps include six playful voices, three in different languages (German, Spanish and French) and one plain, unaccented English voice. Each of the playful voices has a coinciding photo and name when you&#8217;re picking settings on the Web site. One called &#8220;The Bombshell&#8221; is represented by an attractive, blonde woman who speaks in a sexy voice. A voice called &#8220;The Rogue&#8221; says, &#8220;I am ready for my assignment,&#8221; when the earpiece is turned on. During most of my testing, I kept my Jawbone Icon set on &#8220;The Ace,&#8221; represented by a woman with a smart British accent who said, &#8220;They can wait,&#8221; when I declined calls. </p>
<p>The chosen audio app voice speaks every so often, like when the device is turned on, when you query the headset&#8217;s remaining battery life (an indicator light also tells you the remaining charge), when an incoming call is received or when you turn the headset off. But the Voice Dial app uses the standard voice that comes with your device&#8217;s voice-dialing capability—not the fun audio app voice you&#8217;ve chosen. </p>
<p>Another downside to the headset is that it isn&#8217;t yet able to tell you the name of whoever is calling even if you have them as a contact in your phone; instead, it only reads the phone number aloud. If you&#8217;re like me, you don&#8217;t know have many numbers memorized anymore, so this isn&#8217;t helpful. Instead, it forced me to look at my phone for the caller ID, defeating the purpose of a hands-free earpiece. Aliph hopes to fix this problem within a year.</p>
<p>The Jawbone Icon is the first earpiece to use a software platform for adding apps, and MyTalk makes synching easy. Although Aliph plans to offer more apps and software updates for the Jawbone Icon (and subsequent devices), there will likely always be some activities that are simply too difficult to perform using voice alone. But MyTalk is a good first step toward making the Bluetooth earpiece more useful.</p>

			<description><![CDATA[The wireless Reader Daily Edition is a much-improved model that could make it more competitive with Kindle, but its interface takes some mastering, says Walt Mossberg.]]></description>
			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Sony, the Japanese electronics giant, was a pioneer in the current wave of electronic book readers, introducing its first Sony Reader model back in 2006. But, it has been overtaken by Amazon.com, whose Kindle e-book reader, introduced in 2007, has become almost synonymous with the category. Now, Sony (SNE) is out with a much-improved model that could make it more competitive. </p>
<p>Unlike the Kindle, Sony&#8217;s readers weren&#8217;t wireless and their owners couldn&#8217;t download books or newspapers directly to the device, instead of via a computer. Now, that problem has finally been solved with Sony&#8217;s new Reader Daily Edition, a handsome $400 wireless model that I&#8217;ve been testing.</p>

<p>The Daily Edition can be bought at Sony&#8217;s stores; at its Web site, sonystyle.com; and at Best Buy&#8217;s (BBY) site, bestbuy.com. It was sold out for the holidays, but Sony says it expects new stock soon.</p>
<p>The Daily Edition isn&#8217;t a mere clone of the Kindle. It has a different design philosophy and is stronger in some areas, weaker in others. In general, I enjoyed using it, once I mastered its user interface, which took several days. I especially liked the fact that it packs a larger screen into a comfortably small device, and mostly uses touch navigation instead of all physical controls. For instance, while the Sony does have a small page-turning button, you can more easily turn pages by just swiping your finger across the screen. It&#8217;s also better at navigating digital newspapers, something I&#8217;ve never found very satisfying on the Kindle.</p>
<p>(Full disclosure: Sony has struck a special deal with Dow Jones, which owns The Wall Street Journal and this Web site. Under the deal, a special late-day edition of the Journal, containing updated news, will be available on the Daily Edition for an extra charge starting later in January.)</p>
<p>On the downside, the Daily Edition has three main flaws when compared with the Kindle. First, it&#8217;s much more expensive—$400 versus just $259. Second, it has only about half of the commercial, copyrighted digital books that Amazon (AMZN) does—around 200,000 versus the Kindle&#8217;s roughly 400,000. Sony also throws in a million out-of-copyright, old books, for a total of 1.2 million. </p>
<p>But many of these added million titles are obscure and of little interest to mainstream consumers. The Reader also has just eight newspapers, versus 92 for the Kindle, though Sony says 10 more are coming soon.</p>
<p>Third, the technology that makes the screen touch sensitive also dims it a bit, so the Daily Edition&#8217;s screen is darker than the Kindle&#8217;s. (Both are unlit monochrome screens with gray-scale graphics.) I found the Sony screen adequate, but it&#8217;s tougher to read in lower light.</p>
<p>The Daily Edition is a slender device with a black metal body that contrasts sharply with the wider, white plastic body of the Kindle. While both products use the same basic screen technology, and the same screen width, the Daily Edition&#8217;s screen is longer; it measures 7 inches versus 6 inches for the Kindle. In my tests, I found this a big advantage, because, when both devices were set for roughly comparable text sizes, the Sony could hold more text on a page, cutting down on the need for page turns, which interrupt reading.</p>
<p>In addition, the Daily Edition is narrower than the Kindle, because the borders around the screen are thinner, since they don&#8217;t have to accommodate the Kindle&#8217;s various large buttons or physical keyboard. (You can enter text for notes or searches on the Daily Edition using a stylus for handwriting or a virtual onscreen keyboard.) This longer, narrower shape gives the new Sony a nice feel in the hand.</p>
<p>I also preferred the Sony&#8217;s method for presenting newspapers, which allowed more headlines to be viewed at once and required fewer steps to navigate through the paper.</p>

<p>The Sony also claims more battery life with wireless turned off, comes with a cover included—an extra-cost item on the Kindle—and can handle more book formats, including the free digital books offered by public libraries. Built-in memory is the same, but the Daily Edition&#8217;s can be expanded while the Kindle&#8217;s can&#8217;t.</p>
<p>Like the Kindle, the new Sony also allows you to drag songs, pictures and some personal documents onto the device from your computer. I did this with no problems.</p>
<p>The Daily Edition has companion software for buying, reading and storing books on both PCs and Macs. But it has no app for a smart phone, and doesn&#8217;t synchronize your last-read place in your book among the reader and the computer.</p>
<p>Also, I found the Daily Edition required a harder learning process than the Kindle. First, it takes awhile to get the hang of the touch gestures, partly because they require much more pressure than on, say, an iPhone. Second, using touch to bring up features and menus can be a mystery until you consult the manual. For instance, it took days to discover that you could set a bookmark by double-tapping on the upper right corner.</p>
<p>But, all in all, despite its higher price, the Daily Edition is a big leap for Sony and adds another good choice for consumers.</p>

			<description><![CDATA[More on expanding the Nexus One's memory; AT&#38;T vs. Verizon's cellphone signal footprints; how to sync your Nexus One with a computer.]]></description>
			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="question"><em>In reviewing Google&#8217;s new Nexus One phone, you said its memory is expandable to 32 gigabytes, but that the portion of memory used for storing apps is just 190 megabytes. Is the expandable memory unusable for apps? Is memory for apps expandable?</em></p>
<p>A: On the Nexus One, the Motorola Droid and other Android phones, there are two main types of memory: one internal, which is fixed, and the other external, in the form of removable memory cards, which the user can increase in capacity. In general, apps can be stored only in a small, restricted portion of internal memory, which on the Nexus One is a meager 190 megabytes. Although there are exceptions, apps can&#8217;t generally be stored on the roomier removable memory cards, though some files they rely upon, like graphics, can be offloaded onto the cards.</p>
<p>Google acknowledges this is a limitation, but says it designed the system to protect apps from being copied by merely removing the memory card and inserting it into a PC which could duplicate its contents. The company says it is working on ways to secure the memory cards to the satisfaction of the app developers, so that apps could be stored on them. Meanwhile, Android phones can&#8217;t hold nearly as many apps, especially sophisticated large apps, as some users might like.</p>
<p class="question"><em>AT&#038;T and Verizon are each saying that they have wide areas of coverage. Can you tell me who really has the widest area of coverage for cellphone signals?</em></p>
<p>If you are comparing basic cellphone signal availability, each of the two leaders has a very wide footprint. However, Verizon claims a larger geographic footprint when it comes to 3G networks, which are currently the fastest widely deployed cellular data networks. AT&#038;T claims its 3G is the fastest. But, partly because AT&#038;T has the iPhone, which is both popular and makes heavy data usage very easy, its network too often seems overwhelmed in large cities, in my experience. Verizon so far lacks a specific phone with similar popularity which users employ to consume as much data, and thus network capacity, as iPhone users typically do. However, iPhone-class phones like the Motorola Droid and the Nexus One, if they sell well, will test the Verizon network&#8217;s robustness.</p>
<p class="question"><em>Any idea how well or badly the new Google Nexus One syncs with Macs for things like Calendars, Notes, Address Books etc.?</em></p>
<p>The Nexus One doesn&#8217;t come with software for syncing with computers, whether Macs or PCs. It is primarily intended to sync with online calendars and address books, not those stored locally on computers. It also lacks software for syncing even larger files, like music, photos and videos. Its method for transferring those files from Macs and PCs is to connect the phone via a USB cable, causing the phone to appear to the computer as an external hard disk. You then must manually drag and drop files onto the Nexus One&#8217;s icon. In other words, Google doesn&#8217;t supply any equivalent to Apple&#8217;s iTunes or the BlackBerry media-syncing software. However, the third-party program doubleTwist, available at doubletwist.com, is designed to function as a sort of iTunes for syncing Android, Palm and BlackBerry devices. It runs on Macs and PCs and even looks a bit like iTunes. But it only syncs media files, not calendars or address books.</p>

			<title>In Search Of&#8230; Images Worth 1,000 Results</title>

			<description><![CDATA[Google and Microsoft are offering visual searches where a picture is worth many Web results.]]></description>
			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>If you&#8217;ve ever visualized something in your head but couldn&#8217;t think of its name, you might appreciate a new method of online discovery: visual search. </p>

<p>This week, I tested forms of visual search from two companies that hold some serious clout when it comes to hunting around online&#8211;Google and Microsoft. Although Google has become our go-to site for looking anything up on the Internet, its searches are dense with text. Microsoft&#8217;s Bing search engine, which was introduced last spring, is marketed as a Google alternative that aims to return more useful query data on the first results page.</p>
<p>Both companies know there are times when text, alone, just won&#8217;t do. Google (GOOG) and Microsoft (MSFT) have long offered options for searching the Images section of almost any search term to find a visual representation of it. But now the companies are allowing visually minded users to scour through images to more efficiently pinpoint the picture or information they want. These new visual searches are a bit different. And they also differ from one another.</p>
<p>Users can use Google&#8217;s Image Swirl search to sift through some 200,000 queries of images. And Microsoft offers Bing Visual Search as a way of performing searches on images that are tagged with useful data. Google Image Swirl still requires you to input text search terms, but Bing Visual Search lets you select images the whole time, without typing search terms. The ability to search using images alone is also being explored, and a number of mobile apps make this possible, which I&#8217;ll briefly talk about in a bit.</p>

<p>Google&#8217;s Image Swirl, http://image-swirl.googlelabs.com/, is currently categorized by the company as a Google Labs project, meaning that it&#8217;s in an experimental stage. It lets users search for images in certain categories that, according to computer vision algorithms, look like they would fit into the search results. Unlike Google queries using the &#8220;Images&#8221; section, Image Swirl sorts results into several stacks of images, with the most relevant results on the top of each stack. This makes for less image repetition in results, compared with regular image searches.</p>
<p>These stacks of images come in handy in cases where one word has two meanings, so users can select the one that represents what they&#8217;re searching for. Image Swirl also can be used to discover images of a place or thing that you didn&#8217;t originally associate with the search term.</p>
<p>By clicking on the top image in a stack, users can see a diagram of the main image positioned in a center circle and related images connected by lines that resemble bicycle spokes. Selecting one image pulls it to the center of the circle and repositions its surrounding photos. A search for &#8220;Robert Downey, Jr.&#8221; displayed several stacks—each topped with different images of him. There was a stack of pictures of him dressed as different movie characters, one of him at movie premieres, and a stack of his mug-shot arrest photos. </p>
<h5 class="subhed">Hometown Search</h5>
<p>Presumably because it&#8217;s an experiment, Image Swirl doesn&#8217;t cover a lot of topics. I typed &#8220;Allentown, PA,&#8221; the name of my hometown, into the Image Swirl search box and received a message that said my query wasn&#8217;t included in the demo.</p>
<p>Since computer vision algorithms can make mistakes, Image Swirl can pull up images that aren&#8217;t relevant to the intended search. My search for &#8220;George Washington Bridge&#8221; pulled up  photos of the  bridge at different times of the day from different angles, divided into stacks. But one photo was of a Marvel Comics character named G.W. Bridge. Another was of bikes on pavement, a photo from a Web site for &#8220;Bike Month NYC&#8221; that mentioned the bridge.</p>
<p>While Google&#8217;s Image Swirl works well as an image search engine, Bing Visual Search is a collection of 48 galleries of photos and is designed to be a data search engine by associating each image with specific data.</p>
<p>For example, a search for &#8220;Famous Directors&#8221; is sorted alphabetically. Each image displays data about the person it represents when you hover over it with a cursor. Steven Spielberg&#8217;s image text tells me he&#8217;s 63 years old, directed 26 films and won two Oscars, and that his highest grossing film was &#8220;Jurassic Park,&#8221; at $919.7 million. A list on the left side provides categories with which I can narrow the search results. In the case of the &#8220;Famous Directors&#8221; gallery, these categories include gender, country of origin, and what genre he or she is best known for directing.</p>
<p>Some of the Visual Search galleries include digital cameras, dog breeds, world leaders, top iPhone apps and yoga poses. Each has its own detailed description and left-side subcategories that can be selected for narrowing down the results. But these Bing Visual Search categories represent images only from sources that have teamed up with Bing, like Fox Sports, Billboard and the American Film Institute. Google searches a larger pool of data from Google Images, which crawls the entire Web.</p>
<p>The Bing Visual Search results have all been pre-sorted and tagged to associate with a search term. Bing Visual Search is especially helpful with product searches, since each image has a good deal of information associated with it, including price, product reviews and brand. Some items can even be purchased directly from these links.</p>
<p>After searching with either Google Image Swirl or Bing Visual Search, the final click on an item often takes users to a more text-based Web page, where people can dig deeper into the details of the searched item, like a plain, text search. But first seeing an image could help to narrow the field—or expand a search to include something else that wasn&#8217;t originally intended. </p>
<h5 class="subhed">Augmented Reality</h5>
<p>For people looking to take visual search quite literally (without typing any text at all), mobile devices with built-in cameras can let people point and search in a different way from either Image Swirl or Visual Search.Thanks to the integration of augmented reality (AR)—a way of matching real-world photos with computer-generated images—into mobile apps, users can aim their device at something and the image can then be used to identify the subject, as well as details about it.</p>

<p>I tried three apps on Google&#8217;s Nexus One mobile device and Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) iPhone: Google Goggles, SnapTell and Layar. SnapTell retrieved much search data about two books I captured in photos.</p>
<p>Google Goggles is a visual-search application that works on phones running Google&#8217;s Android operating system. With Goggles, people could take photos of the outside of a restaurant and learn its name, menu or read customer reviews. Likewise, snapping a photo of a piece of art will return details like its title and artist, as well as a Web link to more information. Google says Goggles will be coming to other mobile platforms in the future. </p>
<p>This technology brings up a potential privacy issue: Could you some day take a photo of someone and then search for information on that person?</p>
<p>A Google spokesperson says this app has the ability to use facial recognition with Goggles, but hasn&#8217;t launched this feature because it hasn&#8217;t been built into an app that would provide real value for users. The spokesperson also cites &#8220;some important transparency and consumer-choice issues we need to think through.&#8221;</p>
<h5 class="subhed">A Walk With the Beatles</h5>
<p>SnapTell (<a href="http://snaptell.com/apps">http://snaptell.com/apps</a>) is another app that uses AR on Android devices as well as Apple&#8217;s iPhone. It allows you to snap a photo of a book, CD, videogame or DVD, and get information about it. Layar (http://layar.com) is an app that lets people point their Android devices at locations to get more information. You could see an on-screen visual of a completed structure by pointing the camera at a construction site, or look at a representation of the Beatles on Abbey Road by pointing your phone at the famous crosswalk.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re a visual thinker and you work well by seeing illustrations of the things for which you search, Bing Virtual Search or Google Image Swirl might help. Or consider using an app with your mobile device that takes advantage of AR technology  if you want fast information about something while you&#8217;re on the go. As all of these products improve, they&#8217;ll include more categories and images to aid online explorations. </p>

			<title>Using an Old iPhone as an iPod Touch</title>

			<description><![CDATA[Walt answers questions about using an old iPhone as an iPod touch, switching from a Mac to a PC and purchasing Windows 7.]]></description>
			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="question"><em>I still have an old iPhone that I replaced as my phone with the newer model. Can I use the old one as an iPod Touch? Will I be able to download apps for it and access iTunes for music and movies?</em></p>
<p>A: Yes. Old iPhones that are no longer activated as phones can still be used like the iPod Touch. Their Wi-Fi capability still works, as do their apps, email and the Web browser, the app store, the iTunes store and the built-in iPod for playing music and videos. Of course, any function that involves connecting to the Internet will require you to have Wi-Fi coverage, since the device can no longer connect over the cellphone network. But you will even be able to make phone calls over the Internet using a voice-over-IP app like Skype.</p>
<p class="question"><em>There&#8217;s lots of advice on how to switch to a Mac from a PC. But what&#8217;s the simplest way to move my stuff in the other direction, from a Mac to a PC?</em></p>
<p>A: To my mind, the simplest thing to do would be to hook up an external drive to your Mac (either a flash drive or a larger USB drive, depending on how much data you have) and copy all your personal files to it. Then, plug the drive into your PC, and copy the files to the appropriate folders there. Some data, like saved email, may require conversion, or may not be readable at all. And there&#8217;s no point in trying to move your Mac programs, since they won&#8217;t run on the PC. You&#8217;ll have to obtain new PC programs, or download the PC versions of programs you liked using on your Mac, such as iTunes, Safari, Microsoft Office or Firefox.</p>
<p class="question"><em>How do I get Windows 7? Windows Vista has been nothing but a headache for me.</em></p>
<p>A: You get Windows 7 by either buying a boxed copy online or in a store, or by downloading it from a Microsoft Web site, store.microsoft.com. Just be sure, for the simplest and most direct upgrade from Vista, that you buy either the comparable edition of Windows 7 as the edition of Vista you have&#8211;say, Home Premium to Home Premium&#8211;or upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate.</p>

			<description><![CDATA[When basic point-and-shoot cameras aren't enough any more, go to the next level: megazooms.]]></description>
			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Are you ready to take a step closer to the digital-camera big leagues? Many people who have used a basic point-and-shoot camera for several years are ready to bring it up a notch.</p>
<p>The next logical category of camera after basic point-and-shoots (and before digital single-lens reflex, SLR, cameras) are the so-called megazoom cameras, capable of zeroing in on a subject with around 20x optical zoom strength. They also have fairly high megapixel counts, capturing about 10 to 12 MP each, and offer several automatic and manual settings for capturing photos.</p>

<p>Most of the cameras in this category resemble SLRs, with bulkier builds and protruding zoom lenses. But they cost somewhere in the $400 range—significantly less expensive than SLRs, which often cost over $1,000 for the camera body alone (lenses are typically sold separately). If you don&#8217;t want to spend the money or you aren&#8217;t completely sure you want to commit to learning the ins and outs of an SLR, this midrange model is a sound compromise.</p>
<p>Of course, these cameras have some downsides. Serious photographers who have grown accustomed to the high-quality photos of SLRs will point out the comparatively poorer photo quality of megazooms. But for average users like me, the quality of photos captured using a megazoom digital camera is a welcome upgrade from a point-and-shoot.</p>
<p>Another significant difference for point-and-shoot users will be adjusting to the size and overall bulk of megazoom cameras. Users can&#8217;t toss them into a small purse or pocket on the way out the door like they do with compact point-and-shoots. Instead, megazooms are usually seen hanging from neck straps or stowed away in camera shoulder bags.</p>

<p>Some smaller cameras are categorized as megazooms, including the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS1K and Casio Exilim EX-H10BK, though both look more like thick point-and-shoot cameras. These Panasonic (PC) and Casio models cost between $250 and $300 and offer 12x and 10x optical zooms, respectively. But they aren&#8217;t capable of some of the more advanced features found on expensive megazooms—like 24x optical zoom or some manual settings and shooting modes.</p>
<p>This Christmas, I was fortunate to receive one such megazoom camera, the Nikon Coolpix P90, which costs around $400. Though I&#8217;ve used other cameras in this category, I was especially struck by how the capabilities of this megazoom altered my photo-capturing behavior.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">In the Snow</h5>
<p>Granted, not everyone will react as I did, but I took my camera and set out on photography jaunts around my neighborhood in Washington, D.C., scaling piles of snow to capture just the right angle, and using tree branches to frame shots of the Capitol in the distance. </p>
<p>The details and colors in the photos that my camera captured were so much more vivid than those on my admittedly older point-and-shoot that I wondered what took me so long to make the upgrade.</p>
<p>I spent the first week with this camera using it in its Auto setting—an old habit that carried over from my point-and-shoot days (also because I didn&#8217;t have time to read through the manual). </p>
<p>But even in the automatic mode, photos looked astonishingly good—prompting compliments from family and friends. A week later, I delved into the camera&#8217;s user manual and learned how to use many more features.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">A Downside</h5>
<p>One big downside: Though the Nikon Coolpix P90 weighs only 16.2 ounces, its bulky shape prohibits it from being carried along on a whim. </p>
<p>I brought the camera on a family vacation, but left it in my room rather than trying to fit it in my bag during a trip to the beach and on a zip line ride through the rain forest. A compact point-and-shoot would&#8217;ve easily fit into a pocket.</p>
<p>But then I have my BlackBerry Curve 8900&#8217;s camera—with 3.2 megapixels, auto focus and a built-in flash—for snapping photos on the go. (Plus, I can instantly share the shots via email, Facebook or Twitter.) </p>
<p>As more mobile devices include good quality cameras, like Google&#8217;s (GOOG) new $179 (with T-Mobile) Nexus One super-smart phone with five megapixels and a flash, fewer people will need to carry point-and-shoots for quickly capturing digital memories.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">A Pleasure to Edit</h5>
<p>Editing photos captured by a megazoom is a real pleasure. I cropped and zoomed to my heart&#8217;s content, noticing more details in photos after looking at them on my computer than when I initially took the pictures. When I needed to trim someone or something out of a shot, I didn&#8217;t worry about degrading the photo&#8217;s overall quality. And because of their high resolution, my photos can be enlarged with very little quality or color compromise.</p>

<p>In addition to Nikon, many other companies make cameras for the megazoom category. Some examples are Canon&#8217;s $400 PowerShot SX20 IS, Sony&#8217;s (SNE) $480 Cyber-shot DSC-HX1 and Casio&#8217;s $400 EX-FH20. These offer several shooting modes, as well as scene modes for common settings like sunsets, backlight, night portraits, burst mode and panoramas. They have optical and/or digital-image stabilization to thwart shaky hands, settings for focusing in on a subject manually or automatically, and ways to save frequently used manual settings.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Flash Features</h5>
<p>Some megazooms have built-in flashes, while others use an external mount so that a flash can be snapped on or off for use. (My Nikon came with a built-in flash.) They often have more than one flash that fits in the mount, leaving users with the choice of which one to use. </p>
<p>The digital cameras include LCD viewing screens as well as optical viewfinders. (The latter is commonly left off of many small point-and-shoot cameras, but it&#8217;s really helpful for people who want to hold the camera up to one eye for steadier shooting.) </p>
<p>Some LCD screens, like the Canon&#8217;s, swing out and swivel around. The Nikon&#8217;s can be adjusted up 90 degrees or down 45 degrees for shooting below or above a subject.</p>
<p>No matter which model, the megazoom category of digital cameras offers a combination of advanced features and affordability that could entice people who are ready to take the next step into a world of more serious digital photography.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Google this week is taking two dramatic steps to try to catapult devices using its Android mobile operating system into stronger competition with Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) iPhone and Research in Motion&#8217;s (RIMM) BlackBerry in the battle for supremacy in the super-smartphone category.</p>
<p>First, the search giant is bringing out a beautiful, sleek new Android phone, the Nexus One, built to its specifications. Second, it has decided to offer the new phone—and future models—to consumers directly, unlocked, via the Web, and then invite multiple carriers to compete to sell service plans and subsidized versions of the hardware.</p>

<p>One carrier is ready to support the Nexus One on day one: the U.S. arm of T-Mobile, a longstanding Google (GOOG) partner. The new Google Phone, built by HTC of Taiwan, will cost $529 unlocked direct from Google, at google.com/phone. It will cost $179 from T-Mobile online with a two-year contract that will set you back $79.99 a month.</p>
<p>Verizon Wireless (VZ) in the U.S. and Vodafone (VOD) in Europe will sell the Nexus One eventually at subsidized prices that haven&#8217;t yet been announced. All of this will take place on a Google-hosted Web site, a much easier way to buy a phone and service than is typical today, and one that promises to further weaken the power of the carriers.</p>
<p>The company also plans to sell the costlier, unsubsidized version to consumers in the U.K., Hong Kong and Singapore immediately. Like Americans who buy this unlocked version, these customers will have to purchase carrier service separately, something they should be able to obtain right away by just buying and inserting a SIM card from a carrier with compatible technology. (This initial unlocked phone won&#8217;t work with Verizon or Sprint in the U.S., nor on AT&#038;T&#8217;s 3G network, only the latter&#8217;s slower network.) </p>

<p>I&#8217;ve been testing the Nexus One for a couple of weeks and I like it a lot. It&#8217;s the best Android phone so far, in my view, and the first I could consider carrying as my everyday hand-held computer. It is a svelte gray device with a 3.7-inch, high-resolution screen; a thin strip of buttons underneath for home, back, menu and search; and a trackball.</p>
<p>The Nexus One finally has the right combination of hardware and software to give Android a champion that might attract more people away from their iconic iPhones and BlackBerrys. It has a larger screen than Apple&#8217;s phone, and is a bit thinner, narrower and lighter—if a tad longer. And it boasts a better camera and longer talk time between battery charges.</p>
<p>Also, because it will be available on the large, well-regarded Verizon 3G network, the Nexus One could tempt American iPhone users, tired of problems with AT&#038;T (T), to switch.</p>
<p>The iPhone still retains some strong advantages. It boasts well over 100,000 third-party apps—around 125,000 by some unofficial estimates—versus around 18,000 for the Android platform. And it has vastly more memory for storing apps, so you can keep many more of them on your phone at any one time. On the Nexus One, only 190 megabytes of its total 4.5 gigabytes of memory is allowed for storing apps. On the $199 iPhone, nearly all of the 16 gigabytes of memory can be used for apps.</p>
<p>In fact, the $199 iPhone 3GS has roughly four times as much user-accessible memory out of the box, though the memory on the Nexus One can be expanded via memory cards. Apple also has a more-fluid user interface, with multitouch gestures for handling photos and Web pages.</p>
<p>As for the BlackBerry, its user interface looks older and clumsier with each passing day, but it has a beautiful physical keyboard many users love, while the Nexus One has a virtual, onscreen keyboard.</p>

<p>The Nexus One is packed with its own tricks. Its version of Android is essentially the same improved edition as the one that appeared on the Motorola (MOT) Droid back in November. But it has a few new features, including an experimental dictation capability. You just press a microphone icon on the keyboard and start talking, and the words appear. In my tests, this worked only adequately at best, and very poorly at worst, but Google insists it will learn and improve.</p>
<p>The phone also has handsome new visual features, including &#8220;live wallpaper,&#8221; with waving grass or pulsing colored lines; and a new zooming effect when you want to view icons that aren&#8217;t on your main screens. In addition, you can now view miniatures of your five main screens to help you navigate to the one you want.</p>
<p>The Nexus One also has all the key software features introduced in the Droid, including free turn-by-turn voice-prompted navigation.</p>
<p>In my tests, overall, the Nexus One worked very well. The latency I had seen in earlier Android phones is gone, due to a slicker version of the operating system and faster chips. The phone feels good in the hand and the screen is magnificent, with much greater resolution than the iPhone&#8217;s. </p>
<p>I like very much the way social-networking information, including status messages, is integrated into the contacts app. One tap on a person&#8217;s picture in Contacts lets you quickly choose whether to call, email or message her, or map her address—all without opening the contact card itself.</p>
<p>I also liked the pictures and videos I was able to take with the five-megapixel camera and flash, which I preferred to my iPhone&#8217;s camera. You can even view a photo slideshow or listen to music when the phone is in the optional desktop dock.</p>
<p>But there are some downsides to the Nexus One. Like all Android phones, it relies too much, in my view, on menus that create extra steps, including some menus that have a built-in &#8220;more&#8221; button to display a secondary menu of choices.</p>
<p>I also found the four buttons etched into the phone&#8217;s bottom panel sticky and hard to press. In addition, although the Nexus One claims seven hours of talk time versus five hours for the iPhone, most of its battery-life claims for other functions are weaker than Apple&#8217;s. </p>

<p>For instance, Google claims just 6.5 hours of Wi-Fi Web use per charge, versus nine for the iPhone, and 20 for music playback versus 30. Google claims this is because, unlike Apple, it allows the simultaneous use of third-party apps, which can drain the battery faster.</p>
<p>In addition, the Nexus One, and other Android devices, still pale beside the iPhone for playing music, video and games. The apps available for these functions aren&#8217;t nearly as sophisticated as on the Apple devices.</p>
<p>Finally, the iPhone is still a better apps platform. Not only are there more apps, but, in my experience, iPhone apps are generally more polished and come in more varieties. </p>
<p>But, with its fresh phone and bold business model, Google is taking Android to a new level, and that should ramp up the competition in the super-smartphone space.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>One of the hottest ideas in the digital world now is the notion of dumping the traditional personal computer, where most programs and data are stored locally, for a stripped-down device that would operate primarily as a gateway to servers on the Internet, where your programs and data are accessed remotely. This approach is often called &#8220;cloud computing.&#8221;</p>

<p>In fact, the original netbooks, the small laptops that have become very popular, were designed around this concept of relying mostly on the Web. They used low-end processors, shunned Windows, and had very little internal storage. But a combination of consumer sentiment and industry maneuvering pushed them back into the fold, so that today, most are simply cheap, small conventional Windows laptops.</p>
<p>Now, a small Boston company, called Litl, is taking another shot at this idea, with a different twist. It is selling online a highly unusual laptop it classifies as a &#8220;webbook,&#8221; which attempts to meld cloud computing with a TV-like viewing experience—for the home. This shiny, colorful computer, named the Litl, is larger and more expensive than a typical netbook. It&#8217;s about the size of a small standard laptop, with a 12-inch screen and a weight of 3.4 pounds. It costs $699, or  about twice the price of a netbook, at <a href="http://litl.com">litl.com</a>.</p>
<p>Yet the Litl doesn&#8217;t use Windows, or directly run word processors, email, or photo or music programs. It can only perform those tasks via Web sites and services like Gmail or Flckr, Google Docs or Pandora Radio. About the only local program it has that can run without an Internet connection is a virtual egg timer. It has no hard disk or any other way for a user to store anything locally. </p>
<p>The Litl&#8217;s user interface is a radical departure. There is no task bar or dock, no folders, no icons for files and programs; no traditional desktop. Instead, the Litl&#8217;s screen is filled with small cards that contain various kinds of Web content, from photos to news headlines, Facebook status and favorite Web sites. Click on a card, and its contents fill the screen. </p>

<p>And the Litl has another big difference from standard laptops or netbooks: something called &#8220;easel mode.&#8221; You can flip it around so the machine takes the form of an inverted letter &#8220;V,&#8221; with the screen facing outward. In that position, the machine can be used like a small Internet-based TV to display headlines, the weather, photo slideshows or videos from the Web. The company sells a $19 remote for controlling the computer in easel mode. You can also control it with a wheel built into the hinge.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been testing the Litl and I have mixed feelings about it. Some of the bold concepts behind the machine are refreshing, including the cloud-computing idea and the very simple interface and operating system, which demand much less work and attention from the user than a traditional PC does. The company also is promising many improvements, delivered via frequent over-the-air updates, including iPhone-type apps developed by third parties. It even offers a two-year money-back guarantee.</p>
<p>I was able to set up cards for Gmail and Yahoo Mail, and to send and receive messages. I also set up a card for Google Docs and was able to create and edit documents. I tapped into my Flickr account and could view slideshows of family photos I had previously uploaded. And I was able to watch TV shows via Hulu, both in easel mode and on my big-screen TV, once I connected the Litl to it.</p>
<p>But, in my tests, I found the device a bit clumsy and unsatisfying to use. For instance, as you add cards for your favorite Web sites or headline feeds (called channels), it becomes more difficult to scroll through screen after screen to find the one you want. There is no easy way to organize things. </p>
<p>In easel mode, when you see a headline that interests you, there is no way to click on it to read the whole story. Videos in easel mode too often stuttered. Worse, if you&#8217;re watching a video in easel mode, or through a TV, the Litl&#8217;s remote doesn&#8217;t let you pause, fast forward or back up. And the Litl doesn&#8217;t allow you to upload photos or videos to the Web.</p>
<p>The battery life is awful. The company claims 2.5 hours. In my tests, it conked out in less time. The company says that isn&#8217;t a problem, because the machine is designed for home use and will likely stay plugged in.</p>
<p>The company claims it is working on improving the Litl&#8217;s shortcomings. For instance, it plans a photo-uploading function and smoother video playback. So, it will likely get better. But, as of now, for $699, my feeling is that a standard laptop could perform many of these tasks in a more familiar, more versatile manner.</p>
<p>Cloud computing may one day be the standard way of doing things digitally, but the Litl, at least in its current form, isn&#8217;t the answer.</p>

<p>I&#8217;m a big fan of old-fashioned analog activities—books and crayons—but they&#8217;re not enough when you&#8217;re cooped up for six hours on a plane. In advance of a cross-country flight on Wednesday, my two kids and I spent several days trying out the most versatile and convenient gadget—offering movies, games and other electronic media—for keeping us entertained.</p>
<p>We looked at Apple&#8217;s iPod Touch, a Sony (SNE) PSPgo and a Nintendo DSi. Sony and Nintendo have updated their PlayStation Portable and DS game players with features aimed at going beyond traditional gaming. Apple (AAPL) is been promoting the iPod touch&#8217;s game capabilities.</p>
<p>Nintendo has done a lot to push the boundaries of gaming, with the Wii and other products. But the $169.99 DSi isn&#8217;t the entertainment Swiss army knife the iPod Touch and PSPgo are. It doesn&#8217;t play movies, for example—a big minus for my 2-year-old son, who is too young to be patient with most games.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s still a fun game-player, though, with popular titles for young kids, including two that are big with my 6-year-old daughter: the Nintendogs virtual pet and Pokemon adventure games, which run about $30 a title. One big change Nintendo made to the DSi is the addition of two cameras that are used in fun games, like the ones that put a player&#8217;s photo alongside other characters. One simple camera application lets you distort and doodle on images.</p>
<p>Nintendo and Sony also have followed the lead of the App Store—Apple&#8217;s online clearinghouse for iPhone and iPod Touch software—by letting users download software directly to the DSi and PSPgo over a Wi-Fi connection. It is more convenient than keeping track of a lot of external game cartridges and discs. Compared with the more than 100,000 titles in the App Store, however, Nintendo&#8217;s DSi Shop is sparsely stocked. It had only two free applications and about 90 titles, mostly costing $2 to $8.</p>
<p>One free DSi titles, Flipnote Studio, was a huge hit with my 6-year-old. It let her create an electronic version of an old-fashioned flip book, where you animate sketches by flipping pages. The DSi has only 256 megabytes of built-in storage, good for about a dozen games, though users can expand that with a storage card. </p>
<p>With the $249.99 PSPgo, Sony got rid of the old proprietary disc format for movies and games used in older PSP models, replacing it with 16 gigabytes of built-in flash storage onto which users can download games, movies and other content. The change allowed Sony to make a sleeker device with controls that slide away under its crisp color display. </p>
<p>The iPod Touch is still slimmer and easier to tuck into a pocket. A model with eight gigabytes sells for $199, while one with 32 gigabytes sells for $299.</p>
<p>The PSPgo&#8217;s display is slightly wider than that on the iPod Touch, but isn&#8217;t touch-sensitive. Still, the PSPgo and iPod Touch are fine for watching movies. They&#8217;re more convenient on airplanes than fumbling with a laptop and DVDs. And users can wirelessly download movies and games onto the PSPgo from Sony&#8217;s online PlayStation Store. I found it faster, though, to do the transaction on my PC over a wired Internet connection, and load the material onto the PSPgo over a USB cable with Sony&#8217;s version of Apple&#8217;s iTunes application, called Media Go. Media Go runs only on Windows.</p>
<p>Prices for movies on the iTunes and PlayStation Stores were mostly the same at $14.99 for new releases and $9.99 for older ones. Rentals are $3.99. Both stores had a similar selection of new releases, but the PlayStation Store lacked some kid titles that were on iTunes, such as &#8220;Toy Story.&#8221; There is also a directory of free podcasts on iTunes that makes it easy to download free videos to the iPod Touch, including kid-friendly material such as NASA space-shuttle landings and &#8220;Sesame Street&#8221; clips.</p>
<p>Games for PSPgo tend to be more intricate than those for iPod Touch, but that comes at a price. While Sony sells cheaper games, many are in the $19 to $30 range. I liked an adventure game called &#8220;Little Big Planet&#8221; starring a character called Sack Boy—for $39.99.</p>
<p>That price is steep compared with all the inexpensive and free content on the App Store for the iPod Touch. My kids liked a lot of it: a free dress-up game called &#8220;Dress Chica&#8221; and a $1.99 snowball-fight game called &#8220;Grinchmas.&#8221; My son particularly loved a free, beautifully illustrated short book called &#8220;Voodoo Doll&#8217;s Halloween Story.&#8221; My 6-year-old spent hours with a free math-drills program.</p>
<p>I found the iPod Touch offers the best entertainment options for young kids at bargain prices. And that is a gift for parents.</p>
